It’s a mental!

I’m currently getting inspired reading the book Lynch on Lynch, which I got from my bro as a Chrimbo present. It’s mainly David Lynch talking about making his movies, painting and music.

I’m still struggling to finish off my wee animations – but this book is certainly helping me get motivated.

23rd February 2008

Happy Birthday Iain!

What’s happening?

Well I’ve dug out some old animation scripts.

Looking to create them with Flash.

Made a start on two of them.

I’ll post the finished articles here, and working images.

Also, I’ve got some animation to finish with Andy@Hank29.

I have a fair bit of freelance stuff on the go.

Most of which is pretty dull.

I’ll post any interesting stuff.

13th January 2008

“THESE DELAYED UPDATES ARE BECOMING A HABIT!”

What’s a boy to do etc.?

Hope all is well with y’all, and here’s my first post of 2008.

First, up some samples of what I’ve been up to…

The images above were for Dangerous Ink Magazine.

This little beauty is SurfinHelga, go to HANK29 to find out more

There’ quite a bit more – which I’ll post shortly.

THE BEST LAID PLANS OF MICE AND NULSH

Sorry folks. Long delay, as ever.

My ‘complete re-vamp’ of the site has taken a few set backs.

So those big changes will be a bit behind schedule.

But I ain’t been slacking – no sir (cough!).

Usual stuff on the go – but I’ve gotten back into more freelance stuff.

I had become quite jaded with the freelance stuff.

Now I seem to be more open to it.

Oh, and the extra beer tokens ain’t exactly under-appreciated either.

I’ll post samples of new work on the NEWS page (i.e. here!).

Image above is a character design.

This is for a project I can’t say too much about.

As this one was rejected I thought it OK to post.

(Let me know if this is a problem Jon!)

Next up is my entry to the Jonathan Cape/ Observer short story competition.

This was a (heavily) abbreviated story from one of my daily sketchbooks ideas.

I’ve left a few changes as I’d like to add more to it.

As I said – more to follow.

16th July 2007

Ooh! Big break from last time.

Hoping this’ll be the last update in this format.

Got me some big changes in mind, yessum.

Big hello to Mick McMahon.

I loved his stuff as a lad, great to see him still coming up with amazing work.

He’s also been a great help.

Advising me on pencil scanning techniques.

16th June 2007

Not too much to report.

Still plodding away with various stories.

Looking for a printer for next publication.

Tried a few but nothing settled yet.

Here are a couple of character designs.

These were done for chap called Juan Martin.

And the images appear in short film he’s just made.

As ever time scales were tight.

These were done extremely quickly, even by my standards.

23rd May 2007

Life begins!!!

Happy Birthday to me!!!

Yup, Nulshy boy hit’s the big 40 this very day.

Still waiting for maturity to kick-in…

…this may be the time to give up on that happening!

2nd May 2007

Howdy.

New strips (eventually) coming along – soon be ready.

Samples appearing soon.

Think I’m gonna print them up this time.

I’ll still add some new ones on the site though.

(The world emits a collective sigh of relief!)

4th April 2007

Numbness chapter 4 has been added in the Comix section.

Apologies for the delay with this.

These don’t actually take too long to do.

Getting them finished between commissions seems to be the killer.

26th March 2007

Not too much to report, at the moment.

Can’t recall if I mentioned the SCCAM thing.

SCCAM was a group of cartoonists and comic-book creators that used to meet in Glasgow once a month.

It all finished years ago but some of the chaps have started to meet again.

Takes place on the first Thursday of the month in a pub just of George Square.

Great to catch up with folks I hadn’t seen in years.

20th March 2007

New magazines a plenty!

Two old chums have got new magazines on the go…

Dangerous Ink

A magazine/ comic with Editor Tom Green.

Issue one due out any day.

They’re on the look out for contributors.

Wasted

Alan & Jamie launching a new mag under their Bad Press imprint.

Previously the home of Northern Lightz.

Bad Press will also be publishing other stuff too.

I think there’s a Frank Quitely book in the pipeline.

They too are up for submissions (articles, strips, etc.)

16th March 2007

Hello – new image on the main page (above).

This was done for an article for Instant Magazine, which wasn’t used.

Instant preferred the rough initial sketch.

Here’s how it looks…

…I like them both so I’m happy.

But it does underline to me that spontaneity gives images a certain ‘oomph!’ that planning and long winded execution can completely lose.

24th February 2007

Being a Dad rules!

Kids constantly make ya’ proud.

Yesterday I had very different reasons.

My youngest passes her Dance Exams with merit.

My oldest learned how to extract DNA from tissue.

Great days!!!

Being a mom must be cool too. But I can’t speak from experience.

My friend Jo on the other hand gave birth to her second child.

A baby girl called Eleanor – CONGRATULATIONS!

23rd February 2007

HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAIN!!!

(my big bro’!)

15th February 2007

Malcy Duff.

A wee mention for the wonderful Malcy Duff who has just started his publishing imprint Missing Twin.

Awra best!

11th February 2007

Blimey is it February already?

How time flies.

Been doing all sorts of mad stuff – including tattoo designs, new characters, and a Flash animation – will post results.

Big HELLO to Stephen, Lynn, and Alex.

A few deadlines on the go, two strips and an illustration, for the end of this month.

28th January 2007

Hello again.

All is good (methinks?).

Numbness update imminent – had a setback last week (in as much that I took the

wrong pages of my script to work with me!).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KERI!!!

Here’s a wee drawing from when I was between sketchbooks recently.

Not entirely sure what the bean symbolises.

Possibly a bean?

Who knows.

15th January 2007

It’s another one of those ‘apologies for the lack of updates’ greetings amigos!!!

I’d make a lame excuse, but then I’d end up hating myself - and I can’t have that now, can I?

Hope all is well with you.

What’s happening with me? Well, I’m glad you asked - I eventually found my story/script guidelines for Numbness (down the back of my bedside book case!) - which I’m hoping to have finished shortly.

I started a new portfolio account with Portfolios.com - mine is here. Thanks to Pamela for her help with that.

This is my first step towards WORLD DOMINATION MWHA-HA-HA!!! (cough! cough!).

I’m also getting organised with the stories I fill my daily sketchbook with - looking to have something to publish again by the spring/summer.

Managed to finish off some other bit and bobs which I’ll post as soon as possible.

I’m about to do a bit of a clear out before I set-up the new Flash site - so a lot of the existing work will be gone for good - get ‘em while they’re hot etc.

2nd December 2006

Oops! Nearly forgot.

Instant Magazine had asked me to put together a wee article on local cartoonists/illustrators.

The magazine can be viewed as a pdf online.

Thanks to the editor Ian Sclater.

1st December 2006

Hello, and apologies for the long delay in updating this section!

Loads of stuff has been happening.

Here is some of it…

The drawings above are some samples form a proposed book about politicians.

The book is being written by the splendid Mr Stuart McHardy.

This chap was a character design for an RPG site’s competition my mate John Ellam alerter me to.

10th October 2006

Yoh!

Hope all is well with you, cheers for coming back.

Apologies for lack of updates. Recently back from Munich – had a fantastic time.

Loads on the go at the moment, new strips to be posted.

And almost time for another Skye trip – Hank29 have posted loads of new stuff.

16th September 2006

Saturday, eh? Fantastic.

Doing my website update and hoping to get a couple of caricatures done – I swore I’d stop doing those.

But I don’t seem to mind as much these days.

Went to an exhibition at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital this week.

Some nice stuff there – Malcy Duff, Daniel Johnson, and the ever excellent Renee French.

Looking forward to hitting Munich at the end of the month.

Added one new page to the SKETCHBOOK section.

9th September 2006

Bonjour!

All good here, added two new pages to the SKETCHBOOK section.

Loadsa’ outstanding commissions have been caught up with. Yey!

Took my son to a Manga evening in Glasgow last night. All very interesting.

Some of those kids are seriously hooked!

Andy at Hank29 has posted one of my old strips. He took a wee 4 page strip from my sketchbook and animated it.

I think he did a rather splendid job.

It reminds me of old BBC children’s programmes, check it out…

The Man Who Stood on Lighthouses

17th August 2006

Apologies for the site being down over the last couple of days.

This was due to “essential maintenance” (hark at me wit’ da’ fancy lingo!)

15th August 2006

Hello again.

Hope all is well. A big welcome back to Tom has eventually returned from Oz (where I guess he’d rather still be!).

I’m doing some commissions at the moment – as workmen shimmy around the house doing their thang.

Check out Hank29 as the latest Skye production should be on there soon (picture below).

29th July 2006

Howdy!

Things are a bit slow at the moment – I’m not too good in the hot weather, and it’s hard to believe but we’ve been getting lots of the stuff over here in Scotland. Bizarre. Anyhoo, can’t see it lasting much longer.

Here’s a picture I did the other week – I was trying out some new pens on cardboard, but sploshed on some red gouache – and I’d forgotten how strong those colours were.

I’ve added a new SKETCHBOOK page today too.

15th July 2006

Hello!!! Hope yer’ well.

All is good here – slight set-back with setting up Nulsh as a company, but I think it’s a minor set-back, we shall see.

Found a couple of pictures (below) when I was going through some old discs – character designs and the like.

I have the Skye3 cover to finish this weekend, and to get back with my outstanding commissions.

7th July 2006

Not too much to report. I’ve been working on some new strips which I’ll post in the next day or so. Been doing more strips at work which are turning out quite well (really spontaneous – just how I like ‘em!).

Added a new SKETCHBOOK page.

Happy birthday mum!!!

Congratulations to Ewen & Lisa

20th June 2006

Good to see you again amigo, hope all is well. Nulsh is back in full swing and attempting to get my shee-it together.

New site will be a ways off I’m afraid as I’m concentrating on some new strips.

Picture below is for Nigel Barker (of Barker Family fame) and his Pandemonium comic mart – get yo’ ass along!!!

Greetings to the wonderful lads at Hank29 – look forward to our next session!
